In 1995, just two years out of high school, John and David Genchi made Flail — a movie they were sure no one would take seriously. Back then, the East Coast got zero respect. Yet its fickle, gutless surf was quietly sharpening some of the best surfers on earth. With a blistering ’90s soundtrack, the VHS sold in Japan, Europe, and Tower Records from New York to L.A. The sequel, You Flail Two, leaned all the way into the sarcasm — a wink at a moment when everyone took themselves far too seriously.
Thirty years later, both films are remastered and back. This fall, John and longtime collaborator Joel Cohen are taking the double feature on an East Coast tour from Florida to Maine, tracing the migration path of the endangered North Atlantic right whale.
